Space NeedleExperience mobile app

Clearly breathtaking

For the first time in half a century, the Space Needle has been totally transformed to take your visit to the next level — and beyond.

The Space Needle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and is a treasured Seattle icon. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair—the Century 21 Exposition whose theme was “The Age of Space”—the tower’s futuristic design was inspired by the idea that the fair needed a structure to symbolize humanity’s Space Age aspirations.

Challenge Do a little more

The first step to start working on this application was a meeting with Space Needle team in Seattle. We knew that they wanted to improve existing app and make it more “Location oriented” and also make UI more visually engagement.

We were prepared for the meeting and created a small сlickable prototype in Principle to show general idea and interactions.

Goal Improve digital experience

The purpose of the Space Needle App is to provide a complementary digital experience to the newly remodeled space that will help visitors discover, interact, save, and share the different experiences available during their Space Needle visit.

Validating ideas 3 paradigms to test

During our work on improving user experience, we figured out 3 main paradigms.

Location oriented

Experience oriented

Content oriented

Experience oriented

First paradigm Location oriented

Provide the user with information about Space Needle and experiences related to its location on the Space Needle map.

Second paradigm Content oriented

Bring the main focus to the content about Space Needle.

Third paradigm Experience oriented

The main point is the experience that the user can get in Space Needle (a photo taken by professional photographers, selfie cameras, AR, Zoomie).

User Testing Talk to users

During our visit to Space Needle, we looked at what people do on each step during their visits in more detail, and when they were using the old application. We talked to them like any other regular visitor in a line, asked about their experience and had interviews this way.

We noticed that people spent about 5-15 min in kiosk waiting for their photos, and about 30% of them didn't know how and where to use experiences.

After that, we figured out that the most important thing for visitors is their videos and photos that they could receive via mobile application.

Solution Everything is about experience

We emphasize the main experiences that visitors can get in Space Needle (such as Zoomie, AR, Stair Selfie, Roaming Photos) with tutorials and explanations on how to use them.

All user’s photos and videos are now available in a few seconds in the application gallery without the necessity to wait in line to get them from a kiosk.

Results Your awesome pictures in a second

The amount of time to get photos taken by users decreased from 10-15 min to several seconds.

20% more users started using a brand new app in a month already. New data and results helped us to plan out features and priorities for the 2nd version of the Space Needle mobile app.
